FLORA ILLUSION
Project Type
Studio Project
Date
Fall 2021
This project was completed in Felicia Dean’s Fall 2021 studio, which focused on introductory design investigations through global contextual research. The course explored how people, spaces, experiences, and politics shape the interior environment, with an emphasis on historical, cultural, ethical, and social precedents that inform conceptual ideation and schematic design. Through critical thinking, material explorations, and hands-on making, we applied global design perspectives to develop a thoughtful and immersive retail space.
For this project, we conducted extensive research on Panamanian quilts known as Molas, intricate, handcrafted textiles with deep cultural significance. By studying the layering techniques, bold patterns, and traditions behind their creation, we explored how these elements could translate into a retail space showcasing Panamanian merchandise while fostering a connection with Knoxville’s Hispanic community. The central themes of layering and nature were integrated into the design, guiding the selection of colors, forms, and spatial organization.
Inspired by a specific Mola pattern, a color palette was developed and architectural elements that reflect its organic shapes and intricate detailing. The design emphasizes simplicity with intentional illusions, allowing the focus to remain on the merchandise and the on-site Mola workshop experience. Textures and patterns are woven throughout the space, with parallel stripes extending from the walls onto the floor, creating a dynamic visual rhythm. To reinforce the connection to nature, natural lighting and materials we incorporated, enhancing the warmth and authenticity of the environment.
Beyond aesthetics, careful consideration was given to inventory layout and accessibility, ensuring that the design meets ADA guidelines while maintaining a seamless and engaging customer experience. The result is a thoughtfully crafted retail space that celebrates Panamanian artistry while fostering cultural appreciation and community engagement.
A distinctive feature of this project is the hand-embroidered floor plan, which serves as a tribute to the original research and a reflection of the artistry behind Molas.
