GREENHOUSE KITCHEN: ROOTED IN COMMUNITY
Date
Spring 2024
Project Type
Studio Project
This project took place in Keith Kaseman's Spring Studio 2024. Greenhouse Kitchen originated from a prompt to design a station at one of two designated sites in Knoxville, Tennessee. The chosen site is located outside the urban downtown, nestled within a neighborhood and strategically positioned near major roadways and a train track—an ideal location for the station’s purpose.
Greenhouse Kitchen functions as a community kitchen, providing free meals to those in need. To generate revenue for supplies and meal preparation, the station offers culinary classes. Fresh produce for the kitchen is sourced from rooftop greenhouses that incorporate robotic farming, as well as community gardens. Additionally, Greenhouse Kitchen features composting units available for public use, including by local restaurants.
The outdoor space beneath the station serves as a venue for local businesses to set up stalls, fostering community engagement. It also functions as a transportation shuttle hub, enhancing accessibility to and from the more walkable downtown area.
